# Advantage changes the shape, not a fixed bonus

## Situation, question, and prediction

A D&D 2014 ordinary ability check gains advantage: roll two d20 and take the higher. Disadvantage takes the lower. At an unmodified DC 11, predict whether advantage is equivalent to adding +5 at every DC.

## Build

`keep_highest(count, sides, keep)` returns the sum of the kept dice. Keeping one gives the selected face. `keep_lowest` is its counterpart. This is a new distribution, not a query on a normal die.

## Run, read, and check

At DC 11 the rows are 1/2, 3/4, 1/4. For a normal success probability p, advantage succeeds unless both independent dice fail: 1 − (1−p)^2. Disadvantage needs both to succeed: p².

## Change one thing

Change DC to 20: normal 1/20, advantage 39/400, disadvantage 1/400. The improvement is much smaller than at DC 11.

## Try it yourself

Add +3 to each roll and use DC 14. Answer: the required natural face is again 11, giving 1/2, 3/4, 1/4. Checkpoint: represent advantage with selected faces, not a fixed bonus; it cannot produce a natural result above 20.
